50 million Americans are affected by chronic pain. According to the statistics for 2018, 50 million US citizens, or a little over 20% of adults, are living with chronic pain. In fact, the overall chronic pain prevalence in the US is higher than that of diabetes, heart disease, and cancer combined. Chronic pain, one of the most common reasons adults seek medical care, has been linked to restrictions in mobility and daily activities, dependence on opioids, anxiety and depression, and poor perceived health or reduced quality of life. Physical therapy can help you manage your pain without the need for invasive surgeries or continued dependence on pain relief medication. A physical therapist will employ a variety of interventions to manage and improve your pain and overall quality of life. It is our goal to get you back to living life ELEVATED and pain free.

How Chronic Pain Affects Lives:
Pain whether it being acute or chronic can have a debilitating effect on an individual’s life. As mentioned above, chronic pain has been linked to many psychosocial issues due to restrictions in might place on their life.. These restrictions can include but are not limited too decreased:
- Joint range of motion/stiffness
- Social Life
- Work/Life Balance
- Ability to perform regular daily activities
Each of these factors can contribute to mental illness including increased stress, depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Learning to deal with chronic pain and how to manage it will not only minimize your pain felt but will improve your overall quality of life. No one wants to live a life in pain, it is our goal at Pick PT to help you return to LIVE LIFE MOVING pain free.
What Causes Chronic Pain
There are MANY factors that cause and can lead to acute and chronic pain. Acute pain may be a direct result of a painful stimulus. This stimulus sends signals to your brain making you aware that you have been injured and in turn the brain sends pain signals to the area of the stimulus which causes you to protect it. At times the stimulus doesn’t go away (i.e. structural impairment, poor body mechanics, etc.) and continually sends signals to your brain. As long as a stimulus is present, this pain cycle will continue until the stimulus is removed.
Chronic pain can develop as a result of a prolonged painful stimulus and/or a traumatic or painful event. Chronic pain can even be exacerbated by increased stress or poor sleeping habits. It is important to understand the root cause of your pain and to learn techniques that can help decrease and manage your pain in order to return to living life normal. Our therapists at Pick PT are trained in techniques to manage and decrease chronic pain including, but not limited to:
- Manual Therapy
- Joint Mobilization
- Specific/Functional Exercise
- Pain Neuroscience Education (PNE)
